Emotional recovery in the postpartum period

After the birth of a baby, a young family begins a new stage in life. The whole old way of life changes dramatically. Often it is difficult to get into a new rhythm for the mother and the father, and in the postpartum period there are difficulties. These include psycho-emotional disorder. Some have it, some do not. Theories of its occurrence are different: from oxytocin withdrawal to the reaction to the fact that the doctors take the baby away. Emotional distress can even strike women who are consciously going into motherhood and have been planning a baby for a long time.

This state (for 1 in 10 women) can last up to 2 years. More often it ends in 3-6 months. Clear signs of emotional disorder are apathetic mood, decline in activity, loss of the ability to rejoice and enjoyment. The woman's self-esteem and libido also decrease, and there is constant fatigue.

A difficult emotional state after childbirth is often mistaken by loved ones for whims and aggravated by devaluation, such as: "it's such a nonsense, you'd better take care of your child", "don't make things up".

It is a fact that after the birth of a child depressive states can also occur in fathers (3%). More often they appear by the eighth week after childbirth. Increased responsibility, new worries, and drastic changes in lifestyle lead to depression.
