How reserved are you and do you have self-control?

Restraint or, in other words, self-control is a basic human character trait that manifests itself in the ability to control and manage one's actions, emotions, and one's own inner motivations. This quality is the most significant in a conflict situation and manifests itself as the ability to "own yourself". It partially depends on the type of temperament, but can be developed through education and self-education.

Some theories indicate that this character trait is the opposite of expressiveness. One of these theories is the personality theory of R. Kettel. Thus, from R. Kettel's point of view, it would be a mistake to perceive expressiveness as an unambiguously negative phenomenon. Since expressive people are just as capable of achieving success in life and self-realization as people with a high level of restraint.

However, overly expressive people are rarely able to control their behavior and emotions, so in critical situations they can make bad decisions. Therefore, it is not so much a question of suppressing expressiveness. It is more about developing reasonable restraint. It is a sign of education, culture of behavior and it is manifested first of all in the ability to restrain negative emotions and further, if necessary, to redirect these emotions to other (socially approved) activities. It should be emphasized that reasonable restraint should not be confused with suppression of one's motivation, reticence, and emotional poverty in speech.

This test is based on the theory of Susan Whitbourne (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts). Thus S. Whitbourne believes that 7 main scales can be distinguished in restraint:

  1. Stress tolerance;
  2. Enthusiasm;
  3. Self-efficacy;
  4. Concentration;
  5. Tendency toward risk-taking behavior;
  6. Perfectionism;
  7. Dreaminess.

And also an integrative indicator of restraint. As a result of the test, you will learn about the level of expression of these characteristics specifically in you. Thus, for each question there will be 5 options of answers. Choose the option that corresponds to your opinion to the greatest extent.
