Movie plot
John Forbes Nash, played by Russell Crowe, was a man withdrawn and shunned by the public. He preferred solitude, reflection and creativity, avoiding the company of his peers. He was considered eccentric, while Nash persevered in the exact sciences, delving into formulas and getting lost in hours spent in the library.
Deep down, he was a patriot and dreamed of contributing to the welfare of his state and country by working at the Pentagon. And one day he gets an opportunity: a CIA agent offers him a place in the secret department, where his task is to decipher enemy messages hidden in printed publications. Nash enthusiastically plunges into the work, and his hobby grows into an obsession, every line of printed text seems to him a cryptogram. This becomes a clear sign of his deteriorating condition.

During this period of his life, Nash married Alicia (Jennifer Connelly), whom he met while teaching at a university. It was she who had a huge impact on his destiny, her boundless love and support proved that overcoming and controlling illness is possible when you have loving people around you. Alicia became a reliable support for Nash, helping him to change his life for the better and go from recognizing his disease to receiving the Nobel Prize.
On the great John Nash, paranoid schizophrenia and game theory
To the family of a Protestant schoolteacher and an engineer, the future mathematical prodigy, John Nash, was born in the summer of 1928 in West Virginia. Interestingly, as a child, he disliked math because of the tedious way it was taught. That all changed when, at the age of 14, he read E.T. Bell's book, The Creators of Mathematics, which awakened his passion for the science. He initially leaned towards chemistry and then international economics, but later decided on his vocation by seriously pursuing mathematics.
After graduating from Priston University in 1947 with a degree and a terse letter of recommendation: "This man is a mathematical genius," Nash delved into the study of game theory. His passion and dedication to the subject led to the creation of an innovative method that has had a significant impact on the development of economic science. A year later, he presents his dissertation on the topic of game theory, which will win him the Nobel Prize in Economics 45 years later.
Over the next years, John Nash works hard on scientific research, publishing scientific articles and mathematical papers. His ambition and passion for science was so great that he devoted most of his life to it.
When Nash was 30 years old, his illness began to manifest itself more clearly. His wife tirelessly supported him in his struggle with schizophrenia, and colleagues offered him jobs. Schizophrenia has different forms of manifestation, but with the right treatment and support from loved ones, it can be controlled. Research shows a link between high intelligence and schizophrenia, which is supported by lists of famous personalities and geniuses suffering from the condition.
