In 2010 Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller "Shutter Island" was released. An unusual picture that won the admiration of both viewers and critics. Beautiful cast, ornate detective intrigue, mesmerizing atmosphere of the thriller, supercharging images of characters and entourage - all this is about the "Shutter Island", viewing which will not leave you indifferent.

What is the movie about?

The action unfolds in 1954. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) along with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) head to the Shutter Island, where there is a psychiatric hospital-prison for mentally ill criminals.

The reason for their arrival is to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients, a woman who murdered her three children. At first it may seem that the main storyline will take the movie to the genre of mediocre detective, because the viewer sees the scenes of interrogations of patients, doctors, reasoning partners. But this is only at first glance.

The farther you go, the more the plot twists, the more the situation becomes intense, you are more and more immersed in the gloomy atmosphere of the cursed island, which there is no chance to get out from. Undoubtedly, this is a great merit of the camerawork and cast, and first of all the director Martin Scorese.

"Why didn't you save us?"

It was the ninth year of peaceful life, the war has passed, but the memory of people keeps sad pictures of pain, death and fire, you can still smell the acrid smell of gunpowder, and hear machine-gun bursts. Agent Daniels is one of them, his mind giving off images of dark memories. During the war, he participated in the liberation of the Dachau camp. The group arrived too late, and the marshal saw the scene of hundreds of dead people, whose lifeless faces begged for mercy and asked him the question: "Why didn't you save us?". It left an indelible mark on Teddy's state of mind, shook his psyche and became a kind of last straw, beyond which there is no place for the former normal life.

«Остров проклятых»

Arriving on the island, Teddy connects the events of the past and the present, and begins to suspect the head doctor of the clinic in conducting monstrous experiments on the mentally ill, similar to those conducted by the Nazis in their concentration camps. The fact that the leading psychiatrist, Dr. Nehring (Max von Sydow), is a former German citizen adds to his confidence. From this point on, the storyline spirals more and more, the atmosphere grows darker and darker. The agent's wounded psyche produces unimaginable images, assumptions, intricacies of memories and reality, mesmerizing and intriguing the viewer.

It is worth mentioning the excellent music and sound accompaniment, without which it would not be possible to fully convey the author's idea. Unimaginable soundtracks by composer R. Robertson, which is a kind of medley of fragments of famous works of composers of the twentieth century, the growing noise of wind, rain, storm - all this works to create a unique "climate" of the movie. By the way, to create a believable, penetrating to the bone sound of the storm, it was necessary to use 30-meter pipes of rain irrigation, which were held by cranes. And the effect of strong gusts of wind were created by the work of four powerful fans. The efforts of the special effects masters were not in vain, the viewer literally shivered from the powerful gusts of wind and felt the icy rain on their skin.

To leave the main intrigue undisclosed, we can only say one thing - everything is not as simple as it may seem at first and at the end you will be surprised, a slight understatement and a tangle of intricacies to be unraveled.

Is it worth watching?

Definitely yes! Few movies are able to leaveuch an aftertaste as from watching the "Shutter Island". An unrivaled shake for the brain, enjoyment of visuals, actors and a great ending - all this is "Shutter Island", one of the best psychological thrillers of the decade. A must-see!
