You will learn about three aspects of your personality, you will be able to assess your ability to manipulate, the level of ego and the degree of selfishness.

Why pay attention to the dark triad?

The dark triad is a set of pathological character traits that form an antisocial personality image. In psychology, the dark triad is divided into Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy, which are actively studied in the clinical sphere. The concept of "Dark Triad of Personality" was introduced by Canadian scientists D. Polhus and C. Williams, who considered Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy as a complex of a single trait. This complex affects comprehensive personality development, including self-perception, interactions with others, and occupational success.

The authors define narcissism as the desire for greatness, Machiavellianism as the ability to manipulate interpersonal relationships, and psychopathy is divided into primary (characterized by emotional detachment and lack of guilt) and secondary (manifested through excessive emotionality and risk-taking).

What is Machiavellianism?

Machiavellianism is described as a tendency to manipulate to the detriment of others, expressed in cynicism, emotional coldness, and immorality. People with these traits are adept at using flattery and deceit to achieve their goals, valuing mostly what benefits them. Machiavellians, thanks to their skills, often occupy leadership positions and stand out as excellent orators, especially in debates, where they are able to win by any means necessary. However, they rarely look for long-term prospects in a friendship, seeing no benefit to themselves in it.

Machiavellians seek to increase their personal power and control over their environment. They have the ability to subconsciously manipulate people, break down their psychological defenses and form an imposed pattern of behavior around them. Their quest for perfection often requires rethinking and reworking actions repeatedly, while expecting help from others. Machiavellists are ready to radically change their views if it promises them benefits.

Features of narcissism

Narcissists easily stand out from the crowd due to their confident gait, stylish clothes, impeccable grooming, friendliness and sociability, and the time spent with them seems especially exciting. However, this attractive appearance hides a very different essence. A distinctive feature of narcissists is a hypertrophied conceit. They strive to surpass those who stand higher on the social ladder, and derive pleasure from their victories. Narcissists are constantly focused on themselves, are incapable of deep emotional connections, are jealous of the success of others, and are always striving for more. People of lower social status they tend to humiliate and exploit for their own benefit.

Narcissists perceive hiding their emotions as a show of strength. They openly criticize others, imposing their views and advice on how to live properly. Despite seemingly high self-esteem and self-satisfaction, narcissists often have low self-esteem and constantly criticize themselves for any actions or words. This internal criticism causes them to perform defiantly in public to raise their importance. When they fail, narcissists react very emotionally. Their relationships with others are rarely harmonious because they do not know how to build healthy relationships and demand unquestioning attention, with everything having to be according to their rules.

Psychopathy

Psychopathy is classified into two types: one is associated with genetically determined limitation of emotional response, low empathy, lack of fear and self-control, perception of others as tools to achieve their goals. The second type is caused by unfavorable developmental conditions, which leads to emotional imbalance, a tendency to violate social and moral norms, overestimation of one's own abilities, cruelty and impulsiveness.

The second type of psychopathy is more dangerous to society because of its impulsive lifestyle, tendency to delinquency, aggressiveness and manipulative behavior. Psychopathy is an extremely unpredictable and dangerous deviation in the psyche, bordering between insanity and rationality, where the ability to manipulate is close to Machiavellianism, but is characterized by a lack of diplomacy to achieve goals.
