In today's times, when the pace of life is constantly accelerating and every day brings new challenges, mental health issues are taking an increasingly important place in the public consciousness. Among the many problems people face, depression stands out as one of the most common and complex conditions that require special attention. It is not just a temporary deterioration of mood, but a serious medical condition that has a profound impact on one's daily life, work, and relationships. Exploring this topic allows for a deeper understanding of the complexity of the condition and the development of support strategies aimed at recovery and improved quality of life.

Depressive Disorders

Depression is a profound state of apathy that often develops from prolonged exposure to stressors. Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose depression in a person, as it can hide behind a mask of temporary bad mood or be a characteristic feature of temperament and character. To effectively help a person, it is important to understand the underlying causes of this disorder, as well as familiarize yourself with its symptoms and manifestations.

The factors that cause a depressive state include a variety of causes that can interact with each other. It can be difficult to isolate one specific cause, but there are several major factors:

  • prolonged exposure to stress and psychological overload;
  • the loss of someone very close;
  • relationship or family breakdown;
  • problems at work or school, difficulties in career advancement;
  • lack of desire and motivation;
  • psychological traumas received in childhood;
  • low evaluation of one's own abilities, frequent criticism and self-criticism;
  • somatic and other factors.

Identifying the symptoms of the disorder is also a challenge. As mentioned earlier, depression often pretends to be other emotional states. The main symptoms that may indicate depression are:

  • feelings of anxiety and despair;
  • persistent fatigue and emotional instability unrelated to external circumstances;
  • loss of interest in activities that previously brought pleasure;
  • panic attacks, feeling of unreasonable fear;
  • impaired concentration and reduced work efficiency;
  • sleep problems or insomnia;
  • lack of life goals and suicidal thoughts (in the case of clinical forms of depression).

It is also important to remember that depression can be a temporary reaction to certain life events. In such cases, depression is a normal reaction if it is followed by an independent improvement.

Zung's Depression Self-Assessment Scale

The Depression Self-Assessment Scale, created by an American psychiatrist William Zung, is widely used among specialists in the field of psychology and psychotherapy to diagnose the condition. This test allows both self-assessment of the level of depression and professional screening. It is characterized by a high degree of accuracy and reliability.

This version of the test includes 26 questions classifying 4 levels of depression. Each question offers 4 answer options, and it is extremely important to answer them sincerely and without thinking.
