Agnosia

Agnosia is an impairment in the ability to perform higher forms of recognition despite a relatively preserved level of general intelligence. Agnosia is associated with organic brain lesions, most often lesions of the posterior regions of the cerebral cortex.

There are several main types of agnosia, including visual agnosia, auditory agnosia, tactile agnosia, and olfactory agnosia. Each of these types of agnosia is associated with an impairment in a person’s ability to recognize and understand the corresponding sensory perceptions, such as images, sounds, touch, and smells.
