Agonistic behavior

Agonistic behavior (Eng. agonistic behavior) is a term used in biology and psychology to describe a wide range of social behaviors related to conflict between members of the same species, including fighting, rivalry, threats, avoidance, displays of submission, and appeasement signals. Agonistic behavior is observed in many animal species, including humans, and is part of social interactions that regulate hierarchy, territoriality, and access to resources.

In social and evolutionary psychology, the concept of agonistic behavior is used to analyze interpersonal conflicts, struggles for status, mechanisms of power and control, as well as strategies for managing aggression and competition.

Examples: status competition in sports, rivalry for promotion at work, conflicts in arguments involving threats, pressure, avoidance, or conciliatory gestures.
