Alexia

Alexia is an impairment in the ability to read that may result from damage to various areas of the cerebral cortex, usually in the left hemisphere in right-handed people (in left-handed people, this may sometimes be the right hemisphere). People with alexia may experience difficulties reading and understanding written text.

There are several types of alexia:

  1. Phonological alexia: People with this type of alexia may see letters and words, but they cannot connect them with the corresponding sounds and phonemes, which makes reading difficult.

  2. Lexical alexia: This type of alexia is characterized by difficulties recognizing words as lexical units, which makes understanding and interpreting text difficult.

  3. Semantic alexia: In this type of alexia, a person may be able to read words, but they have difficulty understanding the meaning of words and linking them to the corresponding concepts.

  4. Agraphia: This is a writing impairment associated with alexia. People with agraphia may have difficulty writing words and letters.

Alexia may occur as a result of various conditions, such as stroke, tumor, head injury, or neurological disorders.
