Sensory systems are organs and systems in the body that are responsible for receiving and processing sensory information from the environment. Humans and many animals have several types of sensory systems, each specialized for perceiving a particular type of sensory signal. The most important sensory systems in humans are:
- Visual system (vision) – responsible for the perception of light and images based on visual information.
- Auditory system (hearing) – responsible for the perception of sound waves and auditory signals.
- Olfactory system (smell) – associated with the perception of odors and chemical signals.
- Gustatory system (taste) – responsible for the perception of taste and taste sensations.
- Somatosensory system (touch) – provides the perception of tactile and kinesthetic sensations, as well as temperature and pain.
Each of these sensory systems has its own specialized receptors and mechanisms for transmitting signals to the central nervous system for processing and interpretation.
