Anarthria

Anarthria (англ. Anarthria) – is a speech disorder characterized by the loss of the ability to articulate words clearly due to impairments in the motor mechanisms of speech. This condition differs from aphasia, in which the ability to understand or produce speech is impaired at the level of the brain’s language functions. Anarthria is caused by physiological problems, such as damage to the nerves or muscles involved in speaking.

People with anarthria experience difficulties controlling the speech muscles, including the lips, tongue, and larynx, which makes their speech slurred or even impossible. It is important to note that in anarthria cognitive functions, such as language comprehension and thinking, usually remain intact.

The causes of anarthria are diverse and may include conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injuries, neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, or other disorders affecting the neuromuscular system.
