Association

Association – a regular connection between different contents of consciousness, such as sensations, representations, thoughts, feelings, and other mental states. These connections may arise on the basis of different principles, such as similarity, contrast, contiguity in time and space, as well as cause-and-effect relationships. Associations play an important role in the formation and structuring of our consciousness and allow us to connect different thoughts and ideas.

It should be noted that the concept of association in psychology has a rich history and has been the subject of study for many prominent psychologists. For example, John Locke and David Hume regarded associations as a key mechanism for acquiring knowledge and forming ideas. They believed that our ideas are formed on the basis of associations between our perceptions and experience.

Associations were also studied within associative psychology, especially in the works of William James and John Stuart Mill. These researchers proposed that associations are the basic mechanism of the functioning of consciousness and can be classified according to different principles.

In contemporary psychology, the concept of association continues to play a role, but it is often considered in the context of more complex cognitive processes such as learning, memory, and decision-making.
