Asymbolia (from the Greek "a" - a negative particle and "symbolon" - symbol) is a condition in which a person or subject lacks, or has a significantly impaired, ability to understand and use symbols, conventional signs, or symbolic systems. This may include an inability to understand language, symbolism, metaphors, or abstract concepts.
Asymbolia may result from various disturbances in mental or cognitive functioning, such as aphasia (impairment of speech and language), apraxia (impairment of motor functions and actions), dyslexia (impairment in the ability to read), or dyscalculia (impairment in the ability to perform mathematical operations). Such disturbances can affect a person's ability to communicate, understand, and interpret information using symbols and signs.
