Self-identification (or auto-identification) is the process of personal self-definition in which an individual, through inner reflection and self-analysis, forms their understanding of who they are. This process includes making sense of one’s own beliefs, values, interests, life goals, and connections with various social groups.
In the course of self-identification, a person actively explores themselves by asking questions about their past, present, and future, as well as analyzing their relationships with the surrounding world. This process is closely linked to the development of self-awareness and the capacity for self-reflection, and is an important element of psychological development and personal growth.
Self-identification may include both individual self-identification and social self-identification, when a person defines themselves through belonging to particular groups or communities, including national, cultural, professional, and religious groups.
