Automatism (English: automatism) is the process of performing actions that arise naturally, without the involvement of consciousness. These actions and reactions stem from internal impulses and are carried out without the need for active conscious control.
Examples of automatism may include actions related to motor activity (for example, walking), speech (the automatic utterance of phrases in response to certain stimuli), and the intellectual sphere (automatic problem solving or performing habitual actions without active deliberation). Automatisms are often the result of long experience and training, when certain skills become so stable that they are performed almost unconsciously.
