Autonomic nervous system (ANS) – a complex biological regulatory system in the human and animal body responsible for the automatic control of internal physiological processes such as cardiac activity, breathing, digestion, regulation of body temperature, and hormonal balance. The ANS is divided into two interacting subsystems – the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, providing balance and adaptation of the body to a variety of conditions and stressful situations.
