Nikolai Alexandrovich Bernstein (1896–1966) was an outstanding Soviet psychophysiologist. His work played a significant role in understanding the physiology of movement and the formation of motor skills. The concept of the physiology of activity that he developed became a foundation for the study of motor processes and movement coordination.
One of the key concepts in N. Bernstein's work is the «motor task». He proposed the idea that motor skills and movements are formed based on the specific tasks and goals facing the organism. This means that the organism adapts its motor skills to the current task, which may include changes in movement coordination and muscular tension.
His work also addressed issues of movement coordination, the study of pathological conditions, the effects of injuries, and rehabilitation after them. Bernstein also developed methods for recording and analyzing movements, such as cyclography.
