Donald Eric Broadbent

Donald Eric Broadbent (Broadbent, 1926–1993) was an English psychologist who made a significant contribution to the development of cognitive psychology and the psychology of attention. His work with pilots in the Royal Air Force served as the starting point for his research on attention and perception.

One of the best-known concepts developed by Broadbent is the filter model of attention. According to this model, perception begins with the filtering of incoming information at early stages of processing. The filter separates unnecessary or less significant stimuli, allowing only the most important information to pass on for further processing.

Broadbent also studied the concept of “attention” and its role in cognitive processes. His work contributed to the development of information-processing theory and to understanding how people perceive and process information under various conditions.
