Bulimia nervosa – is a serious psychological disorder characterized by episodes of binge eating (episodes of uncontrolled consumption of large amounts of food over a short period of time), followed by attempts to rid the body of food and calories. Methods of purging may include self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, excessive physical exercise, or strict dieting.
In psychology, bulimia nervosa is regarded as a multifactorial disorder associated with psychological, social, and possibly biological factors. A key aspect in the development of bulimia is an obsessive fixation on weight and body shape, which is often accompanied by low self-esteem and excessive concern about appearance.
This disorder can lead to serious physical and psychological consequences, including digestive problems, electrolyte imbalance, cardiovascular disease, and emotional disorders. An important element of bulimia treatment is a comprehensive approach that includes psychotherapy, correction of eating behavior, and, when necessary, medication treatment.
