Congruence

Congruence in psychology and psychotherapy is a state in which a person’s inner state, feelings, thoughts, and experiences are consistent with and match how they express themselves and interact with the surrounding world. In other words, congruence means that a person behaves and communicates with others in a way that reflects how they feel and think internally, without pretense, masks, or distortions.

When a person is congruent, it means that their words, gestures, facial expressions, and body movements reflect their actual state and feelings. For example, if they feel sad, they may express this through sadness in their face and voice. If they agree with something, they may confirm it with words and manner of behavior.
