Egocentrism

Egocentrism is a psychological phenomenon in which a person limits their perception and interpretation of the world exclusively to their own self. This is manifested in an inability to take into account or even imagine other people’s point of view, or to recognize that other people’s opinions and experiences may differ from one’s own.

Egocentrism should be distinguished from egoism. Egoism is associated with a tendency to act in one’s own interests even at the expense of the interests of others. Egocentrism, by contrast, is manifested in a limited ability to take into account and understand other people’s interests and point of view, but not necessarily in a desire to act exclusively in one’s own interests.
