Jargon – is specialized language or a set of expressions used by a particular professional, social, or age group. Jargon differs from commonly used language in its distinctiveness and often includes slang, technical terms, or neologisms. It serves to facilitate communication within the group while also functioning to distinguish the group from the rest of society.
In psychology, the study of jargon is important for understanding social groups and their interactions within the broader society. Jargon can contribute to the formation and maintenance of group identity and a sense of solidarity among its members. At the same time, the use of jargon can create barriers in communication with the outside world, which can be both a positive factor (protecting information from outsiders) and a negative factor (creating social alienation).
An example of jargon is computer slang, which is understandable to specialists in the IT field but may be unclear to people outside this profession.
