Self-actualization

Self-actualization (from the English "self-actualization") is a concept that has high value within humanistic psychology. It means the full unfolding and maximum realization of a person’s inner potential.

Self-actualization plays a key role in humanistic theories of personality, such as the theories of A. Maslow and C. Rogers. In A. Maslow’s theory of personality, self-actualization refers to the highest level of human needs. He believed that only a few people reach this level in their lives, because it requires the satisfaction of all lower levels of needs, such as physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, and needs for esteem and recognition. When all these lower needs are satisfied, a person can strive for self-actualization, which means the search for meaning in life, self-development, and the realization of one’s creative and spiritual potential.
